PN: Ideology and History

My opinion piece in Il-Mument (27.VIII.2017) discusses some aspects of the ideological conflict within the Nationalist Party. I argue that, at its inception, the PN was a coalition of two parties. The disintegration of other minor parties in the 1960s and the 1970s continued to lead to an increase in the diversity of views within the party structure. The model of the Christian Democratic party allows all these ideologies to co-exist.

However, this model also creates some tensions. The article refers to some situations in other European countries where Christian Democratic parties are torn apart by ideological rifts and disagreements. While suggesting a wider discussion with party members and civil society, I also believe the PN needs to revisit one of the principles which it always claimed to adhere to - that of putting the 'person' at the centre of every political decision.
