The Jews regarded the cross as a stumbling block and the Greeks thought it was foolish. These views prevail to this day. Others regard the cross as being an irrelevance or, worse still, a symbol of identity. In my monthly piece for Il-Lehen (25.III.2018), I look at some of these viewpoints and ask whether it should matter to us whether the cross is displayed or not.
I argue that the cross plunges us deep into the mysteries of our faith. As a result, it would be a great pity if the debate on whether the cross is relevant or not revolves solely around issues of identity.
