Giorgio La Pira

Earlier this month, Pope Francis recognised the heroic virtues of Giorgio La Pira, the Mayor of Florence between 1961 and 1965. This is the first step towards his beatification. It is unusual for a politician to be considered as a saintly figure, particularly if they lived in Italy during the Cold War. Politics is often seen in a negative light, and many find it easier to imagine a corrupt politician rather than a saintly politician.
