The State and Future of Europe

Earlier this month, EU Commission President Jean Claude Junker delivered the annual "State of the Union" speech. While the speech lists a number of proposals, it fails to address the long-term crisis the EU may face, or rather, that bureaucratic structures are not sufficient. In my monthly piece for Il-Lehen (23.IX.2018), I argue that Europe needs to go beyond its bureaucratic structures to discover the cultural elements which shaped it thus far.
