This afternoon, together with Dr Jean Claude Cachia, I will be presenting our paper titled "The concept of solidarity and the European Commission: an evaluation of the political discourse with reference to the Covid-19 pandemic and irregular migration." This will be delivered as part of the panel on "EU decision-making in times of Covid" at the PSA Annual International Digital Conference 2021.
Though Covid-19 and irregular migration are separate issues, the two are linked together by the concept of solidarity - a concept and a core value promoted by European institutions. This paper will evaluate the discourse concerning solidarity, as used by the President of the European Commission, to seek a compromise between differing positions and increasing criticism.
