My latest paper is titled "The symbolic power of currency: A case study of Maltese banknotes (1967 – 2008)" and it is published in the book "Public Life in Malta IV" edited by Mario Thomas Vassallo and Carmel Tabone.
This study contends that banknotes (together with coins) have a semantic and a semiotic value besides having an economic value. It takes as a case study on Malta and its various currency issues following independence; in 1967, 1973, 1979, 1986, and 1989 until the adoption of the euro in 2008.
These changes show that banknotes are also a purposeful political tool in constructing identity and narratives. Furthermore, analysing such symbolism can help us understand changing government priorities and policy foci.
